ACHE of East Tennessee - 2024 Q3 Newsletter
A Message From Your Regent

A couple of weeks ago, my wife Bethany and I had the opportunity to attend a round of the FedEx St. Jude Tournament, which is the first tournament in the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup Playoffs. It’s hosted each year at Memphis’s TPC Southwind, and not only is it an excellent display of golf at the highest level, but it’s also for a great cause. There aren’t many things more touching than watching the world’s best golfers come off the 18th green and connect with patients and families of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Golf at the professional level makes me think of the intersection of strategy and execution. Each player must strategize each shot, but that’s only half the battle. Once each shot has been planned, these golfers must execute in the face of all kinds of distractions. It reminds me of our role as healthcare executives: We’ve got to clearly define a strategy for the good of the patients we serve, and then be relentless in the execution of these identified strategies.
My hope for each of us as we enter the Fall of 2024 to be able to excel at both: Creation of the strategy and plans for the good of the communities we serve, and then execution at the highest level. May we all be committed to these for the good of our communities, and I’ll hope to see you in Memphis at next year’s championship!

A Message From Your President

Our most recent event was collaborative networking with students from the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine program at LMU Knoxville, held at Craft Axe Throwing in Farragut. Dr. Mark Browne, Associate Dean of Student Affairs and Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, shared lessons regarding effective networking. Not everyone is in their element among strangers - some of us have to work at it.
It helps me to keep in mind some simple rules. I have combined some of Mark’s thoughts and my own below.
- Show genuine interest in other people. Ask questions that allow others to talk about themselves and their passions.
- Try to remember names and thoughtful details so you can introduce your new connection to more people. For example: This is Monica – she just moved to East Tennessee and has her own consulting firm.
- Ask people you meet to introduce you to others, cutting down on the number of times you have to initiate an introduction to new people.
- Follow-up with people after the event, if you are more comfortable in one-on-one situations.

News & Announcements
- Thank you to all who filled out the annual member needs survey! Our chapter exceeded the ACHE member satisfaction goal this year and thus will be eligible for a chapter award. In addition, member satisfaction at this year’s education event is an incredible 4.9 out of 5!
- We have gained more members this year than we list in April, when those who haven’t paid their dues fall off our roster every year. Please consider paying your dues early!
- Please check out our LinkedIn page to see the series of profiles for our Board members.
- If you are one of the 91 members of our chapter who are eligible to apply to take the Governor’s Exam to become a Fellow, now is the time! Testing centers tend to fil up fast this time of year. Make this board certification in healthcare management a gift to yourself as we are heading into the holiday season. The chapter has a scholarship that will reimburse the cost of the passed exam in exchange for Board member service next year. Please reach out to us if we can help in any way.
Planning for 2025
We are fortunate to have a very strong and engaged Board of Directors in 2024. Many of our Board members are continuing in their roles or other roles next year, however, we are always looking for more support.
It is that time of year where we begin to think about Board composition for CY2025. If you are a member of ACHE and interested in serving on our Board, please contact Chris McCracken at [email protected]
We are looking for:
- President-elect (will be chapter president in 2026)
- Chairs and/or members for the following existing and potential committees:
- Membership/advancement (member growth, satisfaction, FACHE)
- Communications (emails, webpage, announcements)
- Programming (planning events)
- Mentoring (new committee aiming to partner mentors with mentees)
- Sponsorships (securing sponsorship funds to help with our programming costs)
- Nominating (finding officers and chairs for 2026)
- Marketing and social media (managing our LinkedIn account, etc.)
